How to clean a clothes iron (and not die trying)

Let's get to the point!

Let's start with the most obvious: the soleplate of the iron, that little hell that suddenly turns black.

Why?

Well, because we're impatient and turn the iron up to full heat as if we were cooking a pizza.

But, surprise,

It's not the best for the clothes or the iron!

The key is to iron at the temperature recommended by the manufacturer.

And how do we know which one it is?

Easy, you look at the garment's label. Sometimes it comes with numbers (110, 150, 200 degrees), but most commonly you'll see a little iron with one, two, or three dots.

YOU HAVE TO CHECK THE GARMENT LABELS TO IRON AT THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE
If it has three dots, you can give the iron a "sprint"; if it has one, better go slow.

Now yes, let's get to cleaning the iron, which is what interests you.

Soleplate cleaning

The simplest and most effective is to use the same dishwasher detergent you use for dishes.

Hot water, a splash of dishwasher detergent, and with the usual scrubber, gently rub in circles.

In one or two minutes, spotless soleplate!

As if you bought it yesterday.

Cleaning inside

This is where things get serious.

This should be done at least twice a year, or more if you are a fan of ironing.

Mix equal parts water and cleaning vinegar (if you don't have it, white or apple cider vinegar works), heat the iron to the maximum and wipe with an old but clean cloth until the tank water runs out.

And don't forget a golden tip: use ironing water, distilled or air conditioner water.

But, if it happens to you like me, that you end up using tap water, make sure to empty the tank after finishing ironing.

I confess that I almost always use tap water, and so far, all good.

Of course, every four to six months I do a thorough cleaning, I'm not a savage.

Then, repeat the dishwasher operation on the soleplate to remove any lime residue.

And before you iron again, fill the tank a little, not all the way, and release all the steam to avoid that "vinegar touch" staying on your clothes.

And done! Shiny iron and no drama.

LET ME EXPLAIN IT TO YOU IN A VIDEO!
